Scene Two

Outside the hospital. Sam traces with his finger the outline of Pola’s SISS tag on the wall. Jake watches.

Sam Corn-baked yellow … hot sun … Sunshine poem, sunshine song.

Jake A right pillock you made me look. Two doctors and three nurses, ‘I left him right here,’ I said. ‘He can’t be far away.’

Sam Furry bees … Gleaming bottles … Cast soft rainbows on the wall.

Jake Yeah, look you can’t just hang around here all night …

Sam Dappled sunspots … Sunshine melting … Turns the sea florid crimson. Smelling salts!

Jake Er … are you feeling weird again?

Sam remains looking at the lettering on the wall. He traces the word ‘COMA’ on the wall.

Sam Mindless … mindless … vandalism.

Jake Right … Look, you’d better come back inside. Just get them to check you over.

Sam This shell’s from Madagascar.

Jake Is it?

Sam You know what I like about you? You’re a good listener.

Jake Yes, well … look, why don’t we go for a drink or something, eh?

Sam walks away unsteadily.

Jake Pub’s this way.

Sam ignores Jake.

Jake Hey … hey, where are you going?

Jake blocks Sam’s way, tries to steady him.

Sam Get your hands off me!

Jake All right, all right.

Sam What are you? What kind of man are you? You’re like them. Just the same as them … I heard you. I heard them. Get out of my way!

Jake All right then. Right … OK, you’re on your own, mate.

Exit Jake.

Sam leans against the wall, traces the word ‘AIM’ with his finger.

Enter Pola and Aimee at the arcade. A pizza box is outside, beside the boat.

Pola There it is – cheese and tomato.

Aimee What surprises me is that they still left it though no one was here to pay.

Pola Ahh, you see Ricky knows me. (Beat.) And owes me.

Aimee Have you one of his soaps?

Pause.

We mustn’t leave Jake and Sam just sitting there for too long.

Pola What harm can come to them? You’re really becoming a worrier …

Aimee Just like Mum?

Pola No. I wasn’t going to say that. (Beat.) Though come to think of it …

Aimee What?

Pola tilts Aimee’s face to look at her.

Pola No, it’s OK.

Aimee What? What’s OK?

Pola This afternoon, when you arrived, I thought you looked older.

Aimee I am. A year older.

Pola I thought you were starting to look like Mother.

Aimee Charming.

Pola But you’ve lost that ‘old’ look now …

Aimee I’m glad to hear it. It probably was that chipped crystal. I was probably right to throw it in the sea, do you think?

Pola Probably.

Pola and Aimee sit side by side in Jake ’s boat, eating pizza.

Aimee Pizza under the stars. Cheese is a bit rubbery.

Pola It’s supposed to be, Aimee.

Aimee If they can’t find a cure for Sam …

Pola You make him sound like a disease.

Aimee I’ll have to stay here for a while longer …

Pola They might take him to another hospital.

Aimee They might, I suppose. It’s funny, in a way what’s happened has made my decision for me. Or rather, it’s left me with no decision to make. I can’t even think about leaving him now, can I?

Pola I don’t understand you.
